Dear Sarah and Dave,

   I am Dr. Chen.

You must be surprised that I wrote this letter to you. : )

I just want to share with you some feeling of mine during these days and the lesson Sophia and your family taught me.

I remember on the day of Sophia’s birth, the resident called me in the very early morning. She said “Dr. Chen, we have a neonate with cleft palate, brain abnormality, and mild respiratory distress…….. Besides, her parents are Americans!”

At that time, I was a little confused about why foreigners give birth in our hospital, especially with so many medical conditions need to solve”

Then I arrived at PICU little earlier then I used to. I had done Sophia physical examination very quickly and then decided to consult many doctors as I could. The neonatologist come first and told me that she had met Sophia’s parents before. However, there was no bed available in NICU then ( it will be under her service), and Sophia must be stayed in PICU for the following care.

In the following story, I think you have already known it….

I think everything happened for some reasons. After talking and discussing with you more and more times, I totally understood what your expectation, as a Mother or Father. I am a very positive person and always think there must be some resolution for the difficult situations. To be honest, someone may think I am too involved in.

But from you, Sophia, and your family, you all showed your confidence and I would support you as I could.

Recently, as a doctor in Taiwan, more and more mistrust between doctors and patients, which make many doctors do “medical defense”. But your trust and positive thinking let me feel free to do what I think best for your adorable daughter. This good relationship made our staff willing to let you hold your daughter, increase the visiting time, and let you accompany with your daughter in the last few days. I have a very good experience in taking care of Sophia. From Sophia, you, and your family, l felt I become enthusiastic again as being a doctor. That’s what I get from you.

My English is not good enough to express my deepest feeling. But anyway, thank you for all you bring to us. You bring and show the “love” to me.

God bless you,

Dr. I-Chen Chen (Jenny) 2013/7/25
